The High Commission of India, Georgetown, celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day on 15th August 2026 at the premises of Swami Vivekanada Cultural Centre (SVCC) with festive fervour. Around 200 people attended the ceremony including members of Indian Diaspora, Indian community and students from various Universities in Guyana.  Mr. Manoj Kumar, Acting High Commissioner of India unfurled the National Flag and read out excerpts from Hon'ble President of India's address to the Nation.

Members of the Indian community and diaspora, including students, enthralled the gathering through cultural performances.  The event began with rendition of India’s national song “Vande Mataram” followed by flag hoisting and singing of National Anthem.  This year, the High Commission of Guyana took pride being a part of Surya Path Tiranga Campaign, a special flagship initiative of the Government of India under Har Ghar Tiranga 2026, envisaged as a symbolic global Tiranga relay following the path of the rising sun, spreading the message of ‘One Earth, One Family, Global Pride’. Beginning from the easternmost locations experiencing sunrise, the National Flag was ceremonially hoisted in succession from east to west, thereby creating a continuous wave in patriotism that travels with daylight across the globe, symbolically passed on to the next Indian Mission/Post witnessing sunrise. Through this relay, Indian Missions and Posts across different time zones collectively showcased India’s unity, national pride and global presence under the Tiranga (Tricolor National Flag).

The event was live streamed on the YouTube of the Mission.
