Inauguration of the Centre of Excellence in Information Technology

in Guyana

His Excellency Brigadier David Arthur Granger, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Mr. V. Mahalingam, High Commissioner of India to Guyana jointly inaugurated the Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (CEIT) today (20 June 2019), set up in the capital Georgetown by the Government of India.  Hon. Mrs. Catherine Hughes, Minister of Public Telecommunications, Hon. Ms. Dawn Hastings-Williams, Minister in the Ministry of Presidency and Mr. Joseph Harmon, Director General in the Ministry of Presidency also graced the occasion. The Centre is located at the University of Guyana, Georgetown. Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) was the implementing agency from India.

The Prime Minister of India, Hon’ble Shri Narendra Modi, in his interaction with the leaders of Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region in Brasilia in July 2014 had offered to share India’s experience in the IT sector by setting up Centers of Excellence in their respective countries including Guyana.  Subsequently, at the meeting with President of Guyana on his bilateral visit to India in 2015, Prime Minister Modi committed to the Guyanese leader that an IT Centre of Excellence will be set up in Guyana.  In this background, the Governments of the Republic of India and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 20th April, 2016 for setting up of the Centre of Excellence in IT in Guyana with US$1 million grant from India. The Centre will provide training for 500 persons during the first two years of the project and after that, the facility will be handed over to the Government of Guyana. The work for the Centre was started in July 2017 with the visit of a team of two experts from CDAC and the MEA to Guyana and the Centre started becoming operational from 1st April 2019. 

Government of India had also set up such Centres/IT Networking in Kazakhstan, Ghana, Tanzania, Mahe, Lesotho, Vietnam, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Yangon, Armenia, Belarus, Turkmenistan, etc.
