The High Commission of India in Guyana in collaboration with the Indian Commemoration Trust (ICT), Guyana organised Indian cultural evenings in Georgetown and Berbice recently. The renowned Kathak danseuse, Ms. NamrtaRai and the renowned tabla maestro PanditUdayMazumdar were specially flown in from Suriname for the event.

 

During the event on a balmy evening of Saturday, the 22nd of August 2015 at the Indian Monuments Garden, Georgetown, Ms. NamrtaRai enthralled the audience with a spellbinding display of gestures, hand movement and footwork during her Kathak dance. Kathak is an Indian classical dance form with the performer telling stories through gestures and body movements. The Chief Guest of the evening, Hon. Rupert Roopnaraine, Minister of Education recalled a similar performance delivered by another Kathak virtuoso from India in the past. The event was also attended by Minister of Business, Hon Mr. Dominic Gaskin and his spouse, Mayor Hamilton Green, H.E. Mr. V. Mahalingam, High Commissioner of India, members of the diplomatic corps, ICT Chairman DrYesuPersaud, captains of industries, prominent members of society, aficionados etc.

 

The performance at Georgetown was followed by another fascinating show at Sri Krishna Mandir at Berbice on Sunday, the 23rd of August 2015, which was attended by Hon’ble Mr. David Armogan, Chairman of Region-6, H.E. Mr. V. Mahalingam, High Commissioner of India, other dignitaries, aficionados, etc.

 

H.E. Mr. V. Mahalingam, High Commissioner of India, while thanking the dignitaries and the audience touched upon the age old historical and cultural links and friendship between India and Guyana and committed to bring other renowned artisites and performer to Guyana in the future.
