Special Week of AKAM Activities

As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM)- India’s 75th Independence Anniversary celebrations, the High Commission of India, Georgetown observed a Special Week of activities to engage Non-Resident Indians, Guyanese and Foreign nationals residing in Guyana.

On the 21st and 22nd January, 2023, the High Commission of India in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) hosted a Dance workshop and Rangoli competition, respectively.

The dance workshop was conceptualized and executed by the SVCC’s Kathak Dance Teacher, Ms. Varsha J. Chaudhary. With over thirty participants including the Diplomatic Corps , the local government officials and Diaspora, the mission was able to promote cultural diversity through dance and the participants were taught some beginner level Indian Classical and Contemporary dances. Dance classes are currently on-going and admission is currently being accepted at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, for more details please contact the centre on 592-226-9369/592-227-4685.

On the Sunday 22nd Jan, a Rangoli competition was organized by the mission and SVCC where nine teams of nearly thirty persons of Indian, Guyanese and foreign origins participated. Each team was allotted a space with the necessary materials needed to complete their art work. Each team presented creative and vibrant designs and after careful consideration on creativity and accuracy the judges (H.E. Dr. KJ Srinivasa, High Commission of India and Mr. Irfan Akhtar, Resident Representative of UNICEF) awarded the three teams with attractive cash prizes, certificates and trophies.

Both events were held on the premises of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and were a resounding success.
