Condolences on the sad demise of Hon’ble Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Former President of India
Former President of India, Mr. Pranab Kumar Mukherjee, passed away on 31 August 2020, at the age of 84 years. Leaders cutting across the political spectrum across the world have mourned the loss of India’s former President. As a mark of respect to the departed leader, the High Commission of India, Georgetown opened a Condolence Book on 3rd & 4th September 2020 at the High Commission to enable political and government leaders, diplomats and people of Guyana to offer their respects. The President of Guyana, H.E. Dr. Irfaan Ali, former President of Guyana, H.E. Donald Ramotar, Prime Minister of Guyana, Hon. Brig. Mark Phillipps, Former Prime Minister of Guyana, Hon. Samuel Hinds, Foreign Minister of Guyana, Hon. Hugh Todd, Foreign Secretary of Guyana, Hon. Robert Persaud, Deputy Secretary General of CARICOM, Amb. Manorma Soeknandan, UN Resident Coordinator for Guyana, Ms. Mikiko Tanaka, other Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Diplomats, representatives of UN Agencies and people from different walks of life visited the High Commission and offered their condolences and wrote their reflective messages and memoriams in the Condolence Book.
Pranab Kumar Mukherjee (December 1935 - 31 August 2020) served as the President of India from 2012 to 2017. In a political career spanning five decades, he was a senior leader in the Indian National Congress and occupied several ministerial portfolios, including Foreign Affairs, Defence, Commerce and Finance, in the Government of India. Prior to his election as President, he was Finance Minister of India from 2009 to 2012. A prolific reader, Mr. Mukherjee has authored several books on the Indian Economy and on Nation Building. The many awards and honours conferred on him include India’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna in 2019, Padma Vibhushan in 2008, the Best Parliamentarian Award in 1997 and Best Administrator in India Award in 2011. Prime Minister Narendra Modi while paying tributes to the departed leader stated that Shri Mukherjee would be remembered by generations for his efforts towards India's progress.
